Feedback from participants of the Сardboardia Internship Labs

We spent the first few days learning how to create with cardboard. I found the work fascinating as I hadn't done anything like this before. Olesya taught us about the qualities of cardboard, its strengths and weaknesses, how to design, how to cut it with clean lines, how to assemble and methods of folding and connecting the parts. We painted, we made headdresses and costumes and the beginnings of large scale props.
  • Ireland, Dublin
I am an Irish puppet and costume maker, and I worked with Cardboardia in Hebden Bridge in 2016. I saw Tyran speak the year before in Manchester about his work and it stuck with me. I jumped at the opportunity to work with them, so I spent a week helping create cardboard toilets, suits, trees, birds and many other wonderful things. Tyran and his crew are creative, hardworking, imaginative, inventive, resourceful and eccentric! Despite the occasional language barrier, I really felt like part of the team.
  • UK, Hebden Bridge
I met "Cardboardia" when they came to Hebden Bridge for Handmade Parade, 2 years ago.I normally help out with making projects and help the public at the workshops.
  • Slovakia, Bratislava
I worked with Carbordia at the Sziget Festival in Budapest. We came there - students from several art schools in Europe. Because of not the best organization of the festival we were not sufficiently informed what all this work involves.Tyran was not happy about it too, but he took it with the professionalism I did not see at all. Carbordia is an amazing state where people work incredibly hard but with more love.
  • UK/ Belfast
During my Internship with Made In Cardboardia, I took part in helping to build large cardboard structures for the World's first Cardboard Orchestra in Coventry, England. I had such an amazing experience working alongside the Cardboardia team and learned a great deal from them, not only in terms of working with cardboard but how to engage the community into coming together to create something truly unique and fun for all!
  • Romania
It was my pleasure to work with you! Thanks again for having me in your team at the "Made in Cardbordia" project, on the Sziget Festival 2017!

Due to the great teamwork and settling, I had a great time at the workshop. From the equipment to the scheduling everything was superb!

I managed to work in the workshop: to understand the basic principles of working with cardboard, but there was not enough time to firmly fix and hone the skills. there were mistakes on my part, but I try not to get upset, because I needed speed and much was done for the first time. in the future I would like to learn more about mastering hats, masks, because I mastered only the fan and the bear. I would like more observation of Olga’s work, but I understand that she had to finish the office in the Ministry.

An extravaganza and an explosion of emotions:) it would seem so few days, what is there to learn here? But it was very dense and very rich in content, useful content and involvement in all areas of Cardboardia’s work. I didn’t feel the boundary between pros and interns. We made fewer decisions and followed the leaders more, perhaps that’s it. We could have left the site at 8pm, but we didn’t. I learned how to work with cardboard, I created 16 posters for the parade at my workshop table, I spun the ambox and danced in the parade, I was a character in the Ministry. Thank you!!!

The brightest event of this summer! The best personal growth training! I became a participant of the Laboratory by accident, before that I had never heard about Cardboardia, especially not about any Tyran))) in any business the staff decides everything! You should have seen what kind of Cadres we got))))) Absolutely amazing people. All very different: from different professions, from different cities, with different views on life and different experiences. But all were united by creative energy, which was simply fantastic and beating key! For me it was a new experience and I enjoyed studying people, watching the work of actors, happy that I can see how a cool director of street perfomance works and even got a role in the crowd)))).Live in the moment! Here and now! I did it this summer at the factory in Syserti with Cardboardia!

It was a very heartwarming lab. Largely because of the (relatively) small number of participants, the fact that we lived together and spent part of our time in informal communication. In many respects because of the specificity of the place — after all, the plant in Syserti lives and develops by the forces of people who are sincerely engaged in the extraction of creative energy and materialization of ideas that can make this place better, and therefore the organizers were eager to meet us, creating comfortable conditions for living and working. Perhaps we did not have enough time to realize all the ideas, but the most important thing is that we felt this unconditional unifying need to create using all our abilities and possibilities, to create a great story that pleases both us and many strangers.

The laboratory is just a miracle. In 5 days our curators not only brought together people from different cities, people of different temperaments, from different professional spheres, but also managed to realize a huge, interesting project. I have not seen so many ideas in one place for a long time! I was lucky to meet talented people, whom I can admire endlessly! A friendly, creative atmosphere reigned on this project.
By going to the lab, I achieved my goal: to see the creation of the project from the inside. Believe me, it’s very cool!!! All the ideas are on my mind, I plan to realize some of them. I thank the organizers for their sensitivity, responsiveness, trust and for inviting me into their project. And it is not true that Cardboardia does not have its own territory: you have occupied the territory in my heart!

It is delight, it is happiness, exchange of creative energy and new contacts. I got more out of the lab than I expected. We were not «just doing something», we were doing professional theater, if you can call it theater. I discovered a new world, insanely interesting. A lot of new thoughts and ideas appeared. And most importantly: I seem to have (maybe only temporarily) realized how to be happy and what makes me happy.

These are wonderful days! All warm, comfortable, but also with growth for everyone. I am glad that Cardboardia has been and hopefully will continue to be in my life! I’m sure the insights from what has happened will still come over me, but either way it’s all wonderful)))

I could live my whole life like this. Every day is a holiday. You cut cardboard — creativity, you go to the parade — physical education, from the good mood and socializing, you almost do not want to eat) Children would be somehow involved, I would move to Cardboardia).

Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the Lab, and especially part of the artist team, which was a completely new experience for me. We had a great and warm-hearted group of people. It was interesting to watch ideas take shape, and working with cardboard was «wow, how exciting»! Thank you for the support, the opportunity to create, the new knowledge and skills, and the steady hand:))))

Thank you so much for the Lab at the factory in Syserti!
I had a goal - to try a new material ) Before the Lab I didn't know anything about working with cardboard. The maximum - it's boxes, which I glue for delivery myself. And here is just a new huge new cardboard world of possibilities!)

And thanks to Cardboardia for the people!
For the team that gathered at the Lab - it was amazing to work together. Thank you for your burning eyes. I admired and learned from you. Thank you to the organizers and curators!

Thanks to all curators and organizers for such an enjoyable life together. Cardboardia is a full-fledged journey with its own laws and rules! Participating in the Cardboardia Lab brought me an unforgettable experience and added many new friends. Under the guidance of an experienced curator from St. Petersburg, Dmitry Kazenas, we learned the basics of communicating with people as performers (actors). We learned to improvise and interact with each other, and then prepared our own performance, which we performed in front of the audience. Thank you to our artists and their curator Igor Lev from Moscow for the beautiful masks and special thanks for my costume (mask and wings). Thank you to all the curators and organizers, it was wonderful.
How wonderful that the Tretyakov Gallery united us all!

During the week, a whole life was lived - from awkwardness and the first delight to absolute happiness to be and create in this human space. There were overcoming, insights, not-discovering the limits of my own possibilities. and a lot of light. Now I am overwhelmed with gratitude, such a pleasant aftertaste that words are lost in the emotional flurry, but it seems that talking and writing about this project will be for a very long time.
    Long live Cardboardia! Hail Tyran!

A very creative living lab where everyone's creative freedom is valued!!! and taught to work with new materials. Each creative person shares their experience and warmth of heart. Loved the combination of visual art and street theater. The artists brought a lot of games, humor and movement. It was good. We got to know each other closer and from different sides. The curators showed experience in organizing and their creative experience everything was groovy and on point, admiring their talents. In such an uplifting and warm atmosphere it is great to create and learn.

I would like to say «Thank you!» to everyone who made Cardboardia in Yekaterinburg. Everyone from Tyrant to Volunteer. It’s funny, but a couple weeks ago I dreamed: «I wish Cardboardia would come to us.» How great that would be! In fact, how wonderful it would be to make a costume for every member of our family. And it turned out that everything has already been wrapped up for a long time and the material is already being prepared and the participation is free and the place is great and the context of the Street Theater Festival. In general, everything was great, we even forgot and lost track of time. All the people were wonderful and not accidental :) Positive. Thank you, City! I can’t wait for Cardboardia next year (it would be a great tradition)!

Today we are having the Cardboardia Lab parade. I was an intern, and we spent 7 days preparing this large-scale parade. I made the costume myself — we were told to make some mythical creature, they call them «chudis», and I made a man from a cartoon — it’s Mr. Bobinski from «Caroline in Nightmareland». On City Day, I want to wish everyone to smile more, to participate in all of this, and not be a mere observer, because it’s cool!

Our trip abroad was a success! Almost anyone can visit this country and spend a couple of hours or a few days in it. It all depends on how deeply you want to immerse yourself in the life and atmosphere of this amazing country without borders, which fits on tiny, allocated for work and art objects, but actually occupies huge spaces in the hearts and souls of people who have come into contact with the magical world of creativity and cardboard.

Cardboardia! This is the most colorful and perhaps unforgettable event of this summer. I took a closer look that there is a direction «communication» and realized that I need it very urgently right now and without any! I work as the manager of a ceramics studio, and as you can guess, it has nothing to do with performance or acting. And my hobbies have nothing to do with it either. They were. But what do I take away with me? Firstly, the unforgettable experience of working with cool mentors: Kale Johnson, Mikael Virman, Katya Kozlova. Second, a lot of autonomy. Thirdly, different people come to the internship. In Ekaterinburg there were more than 30 people. People are very different. It’s, you know, like a big concentrated communication training. Fourthly, about the holiday....

The Cardboardia Embassy is an opportunity to change the familiar world into a wonderful one, starting with yourself. It happened for me, I suddenly realized that I wanted to live and work in such an «Embassy of Cardboardia» forever. All my life working in a harsh system, I did not think, or rather had no visual opportunity to see that the work process can be in full fun and with excellent results. To be more precise, we worked cheerfully, relaxed as if without regime and instructions, but at the same time we gave ourselves to the process to the best of our abilities. It seemed to me all the time, as if everything was so «slap-dash» relaxed, no one is penalized, we will not have time for anything, but the result was dreamy. Finally there was that very cheerful, bright, unifying Parade, for which it is worth staying for the «City Day» in the city I felt, felt, felt that it does exist — the work of my Dream, with gratitude to «Cardboardia».

We would like to express our great gratitude to the Embassy of Cardboardia for this amazing adventure! It is incredibly great to be part of such an international project. It is a unique opportunity to work with the best artists from other cities and countries. As a student of the Institute of Foreign Languages, it was insanely interesting for me to combine language practice with creativity. To create amazing art objects while communicating in English. What could be better? I sincerely hope that Cardboardia will definitely come to the capital of the Urals again!

I liked the way the program was designed in three important areas: creative workshop, acting and art management. All participants are involved in all the processes, adults and children alike. Unfortunately, there were not enough adults, this is the only small minus, but the pluses are many. From November 19-23, only 5 days, but what! 5 full days flew by very quickly, in one breath. We drew posters, came up with scripts, talked through ideas, created costumes, scenery, rehearsed, made up and performed! It really was a creative flight.

I didn’t know anything about Cardboardia before the internship — I accidentally came across an advertisement for interns on the Internet and thought: «Hmm, this is interesting! I seem to know how to work with cardboard, and I want to see Kulikovo Polje» — so I applied, and I was lucky — and I was lucky!

I have traveled enough and seen a lot (not really, but there is something to compare it with), looked at people in other states, still trying to understand the structure of our country, but Cardboardia is one of the best countries I have been to. If I was given the choice of going without everything and going to live in Cardboardia, I would take it.

Yes, I guess that's a great experience. Now, I feel differently about Cardboard. By the way, the Big People who put me on the internship never understood why I didn't learn how to make castles. Too bad it's an Internship and not a Course or Practicum. And... Thanks Tyran. Yes, one person definitely read this to the end! The ability to organize what was a hobby into a business is a rare stroke of luck. And for it to still breathe and have a life of its own is a very rare thing. Vivat Tyran, vivat!

    Good day everyone!
I haven’t written a review for a long time. I was repeating what I had already said, or praising the Tyran all the time. Then I remembered that it is impossible by definition to praise a tyrant too much. So universal thanks to the World for Tyran, and to Tyran for Cardboardia. I know there are a lot of people involved, but no one has canceled the role of personality in history.

These two weeks were completely different from the usual internship in an event agency, as I imagine it to be: when you are given linear tasks, you do them, you are loaded more and more, look at you and only then, perhaps, give something to gene or speak out. An internship at Cardboardia is like a two-week creative camp where you find your own place and your own role. It’s a workshop where you come up with a project almost from scratch according to the Terms of Reference.

While my friends were packing their suitcases and buying tours to warm lands in the hope of dispelling spring malaise, I set off lightly, with one dress and a pair of comfortable sneakers, armed with a clerical knife, to the unknown and dangerous (as it turned out later) country of Cardboardia. Having previously proved my trustworthiness by a couple of test tasks and having passed all bureaucratic formalities, I, as well as all my companions, received a detailed safety briefing from the Minister of Education — our guide to this wonderful world)
